Abstract [English[]:
The main objective of this thesis is to study how the relationship between immigrants and the Swedish society is constructed in films, thereby focusing especially on gender and ethnic relations. An essential question is whether the films are to be seen as reproducing the predominant order in society or as subversive practices. The films selected belong to the so called immigrant films which have become a new and much discussed genre in Sweden in the year 2000. The analysis method is a qualitative discourse analysis.
The theoretical basis of this study is a constructivist perspective, which implies that films (like other representations) are constructions of reality. Films reflect the way in which the filmmakers see reality and they guide us to see reality in a specific way. The theoretical framework includes theories about discourse, ideology, myth, narrative structure, gender and ethnicity. The theories about gender and ethnicity include postcolonial- and feminist perspectives, together with an intersectional perspective.
The main conclusion is that the analysed films construct immigrants, the Swedish society and the relation between Swedes and immigrants in quite different and multiple ways. At a first glance the films seem to represent immigrants as human and “normal” persons. But the analysis also shows that immigrants/Swedes in some respects are viewed according to eurocentric- and sexist myths, especially in two of the films, and so the films can be said to reproduce the predominant order in society. But at the same time they also challenge (some more than others) eurocentric- and sexist myths about US and THEM. Thus the films can be said to both reproduce and challenge myths; they can be seen as both reproductive and subversive practices.
